We Officially Hired Our First Key Player

Sam OceanDecember 9, 2024

We officially hired our first key player…

Big names I respect absolutely rave about him.

In fact, I once flew across the USA to attend his live event.

The guy who lives two floors above me is a student of his…

His name is Lukas Resheske.

We hired him to solve one massive problem…

A problem we almost didn’t see until it was too late…

And something that would’ve destroyed our agency if left unchecked…

You see, our agency is growing fast. We have more work than we can handle.

But since I’m scripting our clients’ YouTube videos, I’m also the bottleneck.

And even though my partner Timur is on top of everything, handling all the ‘business stuff,’ and managing my to-do list…

I’m still barely hitting deadlines.

That’s why we’re hiring a YouTube scriptwriter soon.

But we’ve been struggling to know who to hire.

Do we hire a junior or a senior?

And do we pay less or do we pay more?

It’s surprisingly not an easy decision for me.

So I asked a few people in my network for advice.

They all said the same thing…

Why haven’t you talked to Lukas?

So I hit up Lukas, we get on a call, and he starts asking me questions.

Within 15 minutes, he already led me to the right answer.

And it had nothing to do with hiring a scriptwriter.

In fact, hiring a scriptwriter might’ve blown up our agency.

This is the same mistake I made in my last agency…

Back in 2021, I also had more work than I could handle.

So I hired two copywriters to take the work off my plate.

The first for $5,000/mo, and the second for $3,500/mo.

You’d think this would help me, right?

Not even close.

It actually added work to my plate.

I spent more time because I had to build creative briefs for them, critique their copy, and train them on my approach.

This extra work ironically pushed me over the edge and caused me to burn out.

I shut down my agency within a matter of weeks.

That’s when I learned a valuable lesson:

Hiring copywriters adds more work to your plate…

Unless you have a system in place to train and manage them.

I forgot about this, until Lukas helped me remember it.

So there I was, on a call with him, feeling grateful for his advice…

And just when I think we’re about to hang up…

He hits me with a curveball…

“I know this will come out of left field,” he says…

“But what if you just hire me to do this for you?”

I freeze, caught between disbelief and excitement.

Here’s someone I’ve admired for so long…

And he wants to work for MY agency?

He says he’s read every one of my weekly business updates…

He strongly aligns with our belief that the future of marketing is YouTube.

And he wants to master creating YouTube videos for himself.

For a second, I just sit there, letting everything sink in.

This is a guy who could snap his fingers and have more dealflow than the average person could ever imagine…

But then I feel this spark ignite inside of me…

It gives me a feeling like something amazing is about to happen…

I say, “Lukas, I’m sold. When can we start?”

He names his price, I send the first payment, and we get started in under 24 hours.

Now, you might be thinking, “what are you hiring him to do exactly?”

In the simplest sense, we’re hiring him to be our Copy Chief.

He’ll help us find, train, and elevate anybody into a top 1% YouTube scriptwriter.

Our goal is to delegate the entire scriptwriting process to a junior…

From idea, to scripting, to storyboarding…

And have that person get better results than I can, without any of my involvement.

I know, I know, it’s an ambitious goal…

But this is the only way we can grow while still getting client results. And to make it even harder, we follow Mr. Beast’s philosophy for growing on YouTube…

“Wake up and think about how to make the best damn videos possible.”

We hold a high standard for the videos we create, and we want to become the best at doing it. Which means we need to become the best at teaching it.

Why is this so important to us?

Because we’ve talked to so many brands that hate hiring agencies.

The agency puts their A-Players on the sales call…

Then assigns C-Players to do the actual work.

The result?

Big agency fees for small client results.

At One Billion Media, we will never sacrifice the quality of our work just to make a bigger profit. We’ll never ‘scale to the moon’ at the expense of our clients.

We’re not trying to grow the biggest YouTube agency in the world…

We’re just trying to take care of our clients better than anybody else is willing to do.

That’s easy to say, of course.

But what are we doing to actually achieve this?

By becoming the best we can at creating YouTube videos…

Building systems that anybody can follow…

And hiring people like Lukas to help.

Timur and I want to build a company that talented people want to work for.

This experience tells me we’re going in the right direction.

And that’s also why I’m going to keep sharing my story online.

You never know who might be reading.

Because one day…

They might offer to work for you.

This is Week 12 of building my business in public.
